Ingredients For Homebrew Beer
Hops are the female flowers (also called seed cones or strobiles) of the hop plant, Humulus lupulus. They are used as a flavouring and stability agent in beer, to which they impart a bitter, tangy flavour.
You need hops to produce you beer at home. We stock a variety in our ingredients store so pop on over and take a look, or see our link below to our online store.
Beer used to be bittered and flavoured with spices. Hops are a rather new addition to the brewers beer kit.
Humulus lupulus plants sprout in the spring and die back in the Autumn months. During peak growing season they grow very fast. Almost 20 inches per week is very usual.
Hops can be divided into two main categories, those used for bittering and those used for aroma.
It’s worth doing a bit of research online to find the best hop variety for your homebrew beer. If you are buying a kit then happy days as it will all be included but we know that some of you guys like to produce your own beers from scratch.
