For years winemakers have used filter papers folded into a funnel shape in their attempt to clear homemade wines and for many other uses. This method is slow and tedious and will never achieve the same results as a proper wine filter. However, modern filter papers can be used as a first filter – a simple means for removing coarse floating debris in wines, before final filtration, prolonging the life of filter pads used for secondary filtration.
